Maytag has been a well known appliance name for decades. From the founding of the company in 1893 by Fredrick Maytag, to the present Whirlpool owned company, its quality and leadership in the home appliance field is second to none. While the company was in business since 1893, the company did not get its Maytag name until 1925.
Maytag has remained at the forefront of the appliance industry and has made a profit throughout the years, even through the great depression of the 1930’s. While other companies were suffering and losing business, the demand for Maytag appliances was solid.
As with other companies in the WWII generation, Maytag turned it’s workforce towards providing manpower and production capabilities to the military needs. This continued until 1946 when Maytag resumed its production of washing machines. In 1949 Maytag proceeded to research, develop, and market a new automatic washing machine.
In the year 1946 Maytag also began its unique and successful marketing strategy of selling other appliances manufacturer’s appliances under the Maytag brand name -this is similar to the Sears/Kenmore appliance branding we see of that company today. The types of appliances that were added to the Maytag line are Ranges, Cooktops, Refrigerators, and Dishwashers.
During the 1950’s demand soared for kitchen and laundry appliances in the United States. Maytag was competing aggressively with other appliance manufacturers such as GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool. During this time Maytag chose to concentrate its marketing on its core product – the washer and dryer while at the same time, still offering its branded ovens and refrigerators.
During the 1960’s, Maytag stopped its marketing of its “branded” oven and refrigerator line and came up with a new design of portable dishwashers and garbage disposers. This was a period of great expansion of the Maytag Company, and its employee base rose sharply. Seven out of Ten households in the United States owned these appliances. This decade they took over the company Magic Chef.
From years of 1997 to the 2000’s a new washer and dryer set was developed. It was called the Neptune. The washer had a new front-load design and the dryer was solid and dependable. This was one of their best selling washer and dryers in the United States. The Neptune line was eventually turned over the Samsung but it still retained its Neptune name. Also during this period, the Amana Company was acquired.
In the year 2000’s, the company was competing aggressively with other appliance manufactures and decision had to be made in regards to outsourcing to keep prices low. During these difficult times appliance quality came into question by the consumers. Their once dependable washer and dryer appliances were eventually being viewed us undependable. At this time however, 88 percent of the appliance production was still in the US
